Energy Performance
Energy Performance is a licensed add-on that produces monthly energy consumption and performance reports from the meter data already logged in SCADA. What the module provides is measurement and performance data for an ISO 50001 energy management system:
- monthly energy totals with a clearly stated measurement boundary, and a breakdown by area/line,
- the calculation status, data quality and value source for every meter and month,
- justified and documented corrections,
- energy intensity relative to production (EnPI), baseline (EnB) and target comparison,
- monthly reports that are closed, cannot be changed and are tracked by revision, and the XLSX file of these reports.
Scope of the module
The module does not replace the organization's energy management system, certification or audit. Meetings, decisions, action plans, document control, nonconformities and approval chains are outside the scope of the module. Whether an indicator (for example kWh/t) is a suitable method for your site is for the user to judge. Without method suitability being established, the product does not produce an "improvement" or "savings" result; it only shows a "difference".
The free Consumptions and Consumption Pivot screens and the energy page templates are independent of this module and do not change.
Screens
The module appears in the side menu as the Energy Performance group:
| Menu item | What you do there | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Period Report | Calculate, review, correct and close one month of a scope, calculate a new revision, get the XLSX | Period Report |
| Trend | Monthly consumption or energy intensity; baseline and target lines | Trend |
| Definitions | Site and area/line, meters and tag links, kWh factors, production, baseline and target, archive access | Definitions |
| Closed Reports | Open and download the official monthly reports | Closed Reports and Archive |
The Closed Reports item appears only if there is at least one closed report you can access. The other three items need the add-on and an energy role (see License and Roles and access).
The top of the screens has the same selectors: Site (scope tree) and Month (only a month can be selected; future months cannot be selected). The selected scope, month and revision are kept in the address bar, so you can copy and share the link.
Basic concepts
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Scope | Where the report belongs: a Site or an Area/Line under it. A report is always for one scope and one calendar month. |
| Meter | A measuring point linked to a logged consumption tag. Energy type: Electricity, Natural gas, Water or Steam. |
| Total membership | How the meter enters the total: Included in site total (energy purchased by the site), Internal distribution — breakdown only (part of the total; not added to the total a second time) or, fixed for water, Non-energy — shown separately. |
| kWh factor | The factor that converts the consumption in the meter's own unit to kWh (for example kWh/Sm³ for natural gas). It takes effect from the start of a month. For an electricity meter that measures kWh, the factor is automatically 1; water is not converted to kWh. |
| Tag link | Which tag's log data the meter uses. A link is valid from the moment it is created; earlier months need a history declaration. |
| Production | The quantity used for energy intensity (for example tons). It is entered manually each month or read from a tag. |
| Energy intensity (EnPI) | Total energy (kWh) ÷ production quantity. It is not calculated if no production is defined. |
| Baseline (EnB) and Target | The measure you compare later months with, and a percentage reduction or absolute target against it. They are not required for the report. |
| Draft | A month result that has been calculated but not closed. It can be recalculated. |
| Closed report (official report) | The unchangeable record of a closed month. If a change is needed, a new revision (Rev. 2, Rev. 3 …) is closed; the previous revision is kept. |
Calculation chain. For every meter, the month value is found with the following steps, and the report shows each step:
- Raw measurement: The month's consumption from the log records in the SCADA archive. The same calculation rule as on the free consumption screens is used.
- Tag factor: The Total Value Conversion[Factor/Divisor] setting of the log definition (see Log (Archive) Definitions). The report writes the value at calculation time; changes made before the module was set up are not known.
- Correction: A delta correction or a manual period total, if there is one.
- Effective value: The value that goes into the totals and the energy intensity.
- kWh factor: The effective value is converted to kWh.
Months are calendar months in the site's time zone; the Calculation details section of the report shows the Site time zone.
License
Energy Performance is an add-on for the Standard and Professional packages. It is not available in the Starter package. In new Standard and Professional offers it is selected by default. Existing licenses do not get this right automatically when upgrading to 2.11; a new license file with the right added must be installed (see License).
The right is enabled only if the installed license file contains the add-on. There is no exception for the SystemAdmin account either.
| Action | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Calculation, changing definitions, tag link and its approval, correction, production entry, closing | Add-on + the relevant role + current data rights on the tags in the scope |
| Trend, and calculating a new revision for a closed month | Add-on + an energy role + current data rights + valid tag links |
| Opening a closed report and downloading the XLSX | No add-on needed. An energy role with current data rights on the tags in the scope, or archive access granted for the scope |
If the license state cannot be read, the protected menu items are not shown.
Archive mode
If the add-on is not in the installation or is removed from the license, the module switches to archive mode. Closed reports are evidence records, so they stay readable:
- Only Closed Reports stays in the menu (if there is at least one closed report you can access).
- The following information bar appears at the top of the page: The Energy Performance add-on is not enabled on this installation. You can view and download closed reports; new calculations, definitions and closings are not possible. SystemAdmin also sees the License information link in the bar.
- If the Period Report, Trend or Definitions address is opened directly, you are redirected to the Closed Reports list.
- Official report links shared earlier keep working.
- Definitions and tag links are not deleted. When the add-on is enabled again, you continue where you left off.
Roles and access
The module adds four role types. Roles are given to groups on the User and Group Management screen (see User and Group Management):
| Role type | Description in the interface |
|---|---|
| Energy Reader | Read-only view of energy definitions, trend, period report and closed reports |
| Energy Data Entry | Energy Reader plus monthly manual values for months that are not closed |
| Energy Management | Energy definitions, tag mappings, corrections, production entry and calculation |
| Energy Closing | Month closing and granting archive access |
The Editor role and SystemAdmin can do the actions of all four roles. The energy roles do not depend on the add-on; they appear in the role list without the add-on too.
| Action | Energy Reader | Energy Data Entry | Energy Management | Energy Closing | Editor / SystemAdmin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opening the Period Report, Trend and Definitions screens | Yes (read-only) | Yes (read-only) | Yes | Yes (definitions read-only) | Yes |
| Opening a closed report with current data rights | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Entering monthly manual values (for example monthly production) | No | Only for months that are not closed | Yes | No | Yes |
| Definitions, tag link, history declaration, kWh factor, production, baseline and target | No | No | Yes | No | Yes |
| Starting a calculation, entering and revoking corrections | No | No | Yes | No | Yes |
| Closing a month, closing a new revision | No | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Granting and removing archive access | No | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| After a restore, approving and relinking links whose tag was deleted or changed | No | No | No | No | Editor role only |
Recommendations for choosing roles:
- Give the Energy Reader role to users who review the reports and the live data (for example an internal auditor or a manager). For an auditor who reads only closed reports of certain scopes, grant archive access per scope instead of a role.
- Give the Energy Data Entry role to users who enter the monthly production (for example a shift supervisor or production planning).
- It is recommended to give data entry and corrections to different people than month closing. The product does not enforce this separation.
A role alone does not give data rights. Every action also needs current data (process group) rights on the tags that the meters in the scope are linked to (see Process Groups and Access):
- The official report is shown only to a user who can access all meters of the scope. A different total is not shown by leaving out the rows you have no rights on. You can select a sub-scope (Area/Line) you can access.
- Closing needs, in addition to the closing role, data rights on all meters of the scope.
- Opening a closed report with current data rights also needs an energy role; process group rights alone are not enough. A user without an energy role (for example a user with only the Monitor role) opens closed reports only through archive access.
- In an unauthorized situation, the screen gives no meter name, tag name or number.
Archive access defines the roles that can read the closed reports of a scope without SCADA data rights (for example auditors). Archive access can be granted to any role; the role does not need to be an energy role. This access is granted with the Energy Closing role on the Definitions > Archive Access tab; see Archive access.
Monthly manual value entry
With the Energy Management role, monthly manual values are entered in the Period Report (see Monthly production entry) or in the Manual entry table widget on pages. The Energy Data Entry role enters values in the Period Report or in the Manual entry table widget, only for months that are not closed; calculation, corrections, closing and Definitions are read-only for this role.
If a user's right to write energy data comes only from the Energy Data Entry role, two limits apply:
- Month not closed: A value cannot be entered for a month that is closed in the variable's scope or in a scope above it. The Manual entry table shows these months read-only: Closed months are read-only for your role; values can be entered only in open months. If the month was closed while you were entering the value, the value is not saved: This month is closed; only the Energy Management role can change its value. The saved value is kept.
- Data rights on the whole scope: The user's process group rights must cover all linked tags in the scope (including its areas/lines), and the scope must have at least one meter linked to a tag. Otherwise the value is not saved: You cannot enter values for this scope: your data rights do not cover every meter tag of the scope, or the scope has no linked meter. The saved value is kept.
Energy Management, Editor and SystemAdmin can also enter values for a closed month. The closed report is not affected; the new value is used in the next calculation of that month (a new revision).
First report
If the installation has no site yet, the Period Report screen shows the 3 Steps to Your First Report list: If your meters are already logged, this takes about 30 minutes.
- Create a site: Enter the site name with Add Site.
- Add meters — choose your meters from the logged tags: the Add Meters from Tags wizard (see Add Meters from Tags). If you want the report for last month, give the history declaration in step 3 of the wizard for a month before this one.
- Calculate the report: In the Period Report, calculate, review and close the month (see Period Report).
Completed steps are marked Done. A step appears disabled, with the reason, until the previous one is finished (for example Add a site first.).
| Information | For the first report |
|---|---|
| Site name, meter name, energy type, linked tag, total membership | Required |
| Unit, aggregation, log type, tag factor | Not asked; taken from the tag's log definition |
| kWh factor for natural gas and steam | Can be left empty; the energy total is then a Partial total |
| History declaration | Needed for the report of a past month |
| Area/Line, upstream meter, data owner, calibration information | Optional |
| Production, baseline, target | Optional; only for comparison |
The calculation runs in the background and is limited so that it does not slow down live data collection: only one energy calculation runs at a time on the installation, and the calculation waits while SCADA is busy. Details: Calculation.
